Cairns · Queensland · Local gem

  • Daintree Rainforest 48 km

Daintree · Queensland · UNESCO heritage

Rainforest that runs from the Daintree River north to Cooktown and inland to the Great Dividing Range, about 105 kilometres by road north of Cairns. A cable ferry carries cars across the river into it, and the forest comes right down to the beaches of the coast.

  • Cape Tribulation 49 km

Cape Tribulation · Queensland · Local gem

A headland on the far north Queensland coast where the Daintree rainforest meets the reef, home to only about 120 people. Captain Cook gave it its name in 1770, after the Endeavour ran onto a reef offshore.

  • Mossman Gorge 51 km

Mossman · Queensland · Local gem

A gorge of the Mossman River at the southern edge of the Daintree, where clear water runs over granite boulders under the rainforest canopy. It lies on the country of the Kuku Yalanji people, and walking tracks lead from the visitor centre into the forest.

  • Skyrail Rainforest Cableway 51 km

Cairns · Queensland · Local gem

A gondola cableway running 7.5 kilometres above the rainforest canopy of Barron Gorge National Park, from Smithfield in Cairns up to Kuranda. When it opened in 1995 it was the longest gondola cableway in the world, and it stops at stations with boardwalks through the forest.

  • Kuranda Scenic Railway 55 km

Cairns · Queensland · Local gem

A heritage train that climbs from Cairns over the Great Dividing Range to the village of Kuranda on the Atherton Tableland, along a line built in 1891. The route winds through the Macalister Range, past waterfalls and through tunnels cut by hand.

  • Wet Tropics of Queensland 89 km

Cairns · Queensland · UNESCO heritage

Some 8,940 square kilometres of very wet tropical forest along the coast and ranges of north Queensland, inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1988. It meets all four natural criteria for World Heritage, and takes in the Daintree, Barron Gorge and Mossman Gorge.

  • Paronella Park 140 km

Innisfail · Queensland · Local gem

A Spanish-style castle, grounds and gardens built beside the waterfall at Mena Creek by José Paronella in the 1930s, as a place for locals to swim, dance and picnic. It fell derelict for decades and has since been restored, its mossy stone stairs and towers half taken over by the rainforest.
