The oldest of the four bridges over the Grand Canal, linking the San Marco and San Polo districts. A pontoon bridge first crossed here in 1173, and the present stone arch carries two rows of shops, with the Rialto market just beyond.

The Venetian Gothic palace that housed the Doge, the councils and even the prisons of the Republic of Venice. First built in 810 and rebuilt from 1340, its pink and white facade rests on open arcades above the waterfront, and it has been a museum since 1923.

An octagonal Baroque church under a great white dome, standing at the point where the Grand Canal meets the San Marco basin. Venetians call it simply La Salute, and it was built in the 17th century by Baldassare Longhena as a votive offering to the Virgin.
