Mount Longonot 20 km
A stratovolcano southeast of Lake Naivasha, thought to have last erupted in the 1860s. A path climbs to the crater rim and loops around it, with a forested crater floor below. The full loop is a few hours of steady walking, and the summit stands at about 2,780 metres.
Mount Suswa 31 km
A shield volcano in the Rift Valley, between Nairobi and Narok, with a crater inside a crater. Lava tube caves run beneath it and are home to bats and baboons. Hikers climb the outer rim, and guided walks lead into the caves, so a torch and a local guide are needed.

Mount Kipipiri 43 km
An isolated volcano in the Wanjohi Valley, about 32 kilometres northeast of Lake Naivasha. Its forested slopes and cool air make it a quiet walking area on the Kinangop Plateau. Walkers can climb to the summit through bamboo and forest, and the surrounding farmland is green for most of the year.
Aberdare Range 50 km
A mountain range about 160 kilometres long north of Nairobi, protected as Aberdare National Park. Moorland, bamboo and forest give way to waterfalls, with Mount Satima as the highest point. Elephants, leopards and bongo live in its forests, and the Chania and Gura waterfalls drop from its slopes.
Lake Nakuru National Park 54 km
A shallow soda lake in the Rift Valley at 1,754 metres, surrounded by a national park. It is known for flamingos that gather on the water and for rhinos in the park's woodland and grassland.
Mount Satima 55 km
The highest peak of the Aberdare Range and the third highest mountain in Kenya, at about 4,000 metres. Hikers climb through bamboo and moorland to a rocky summit with wide views. Nights on the high ground are cold, and frost is common.
