Gunung Mulu National Park
A World Heritage park of caves and limestone karst in the mountainous rainforest of Sarawak. Its caves, among the largest ever found, became famous through the Royal Geographical Society expedition of 1977 and 1978, which put over 100 scientists in the field.
-
Niah National Park
A World Heritage park in Sarawak built around the Niah Caves, one of the great archaeological sites of Southeast Asia. A plank walk through the forest leads to the Great Cave, where very old human remains were found, and on to the Painted Cave.
Hidden gems in Sarawak (10)
-
Bako National Park
Sarawak's oldest national park, set up in 1957 at the tip of a peninsula where the Bako and Kuching rivers meet the sea. Erosion has cut its sandstone into steep cliffs and rocky headlands, with white sand beaches between them.
-
Borneo Cultures Museum
The largest museum in Malaysia, and the second largest in Southeast Asia, in the centre of Kuching. Its galleries hold objects from the history and heritage of Sarawak's peoples and others across the island of Borneo.
-
Darul Hana Bridge
A pedestrian bridge over the Sarawak River beside the Kuching Waterfront, the only one linking the north and south of the city. Its curving deck and twin towers are lit up at night.
-
Fort Margherita
A fort built in 1879 by Charles Brooke, the second White Rajah, in the style of an English castle to guard Kuching against pirates. It stands on the north bank of the Sarawak River and later served as a police museum.
-
Kubah National Park
A park in the Matang Range about 20 kilometres from Kuching, its three sandstone peaks, Serapi, Selang and Sendok, visible from the city on clear days. Dipterocarp forest covers most of it, with patches of kerangas and scrub.
-
Kuching Waterfront
A riverside promenade running nearly 1.9 kilometres along the south bank of the Sarawak River in the centre of Kuching. It looks across the water to the Astana and Fort Margherita, and small boats ferry people to the other side.
-
Mount Santubong
The highest point of Kuching, rising over the Damai peninsula about 30 kilometres north of the city centre. Jungle trails climb its slopes, and a Sarawak legend tells of a princess turned to stone here.
-
Sarawak Cultural Village
A living museum at the foot of Mount Santubong, where traditional houses of Sarawak's peoples, Iban and Bidayuh longhouses among them, stand around a small lake. It is also the home of the Rainforest World Music Festival.
-
The Astana
A palace on the north bank of the Sarawak River, built in 1870 by Charles Brooke as a wedding gift to his wife Margaret. It is the residence of Sarawak's governor and closed inside, though its gardens can be reached by boat from the waterfront.
-
Tua Pek Kong Temple
The oldest temple in Kuching, a Chinese temple near the waterfront, opposite the Chinese History Museum. It is a stop on the city's heritage trail and busiest around Chinese New Year.
