Near Redang Island
Lang Tengah Island 15 km
A small island off the Terengganu coast between Redang and the Perhentians, reached by ferry from Merang. It has only a handful of resorts, so its beaches and reefs stay quiet.
Perhentian Islands 34 km
Two main islands, Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil, off the coast of Besut in Terengganu. There are no roads, so boats link the beaches, and the clear water and reefs make them a favourite for snorkelling and diving.
Crystal Mosque 52 km
A mosque of steel, glass and crystal on the river island of Wan Man, opened in 2008 within the Islamic Heritage Park. It holds more than 1,500 worshippers and glows after dark when it is lit from within.
Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque 57 km
Known as the Floating Mosque, it stands in the Kuala Ibai lagoon near the river mouth, about 4 kilometres from Kuala Terengganu. Finished in 1995, it mixes modern and Moorish design in marble, ceramics and mosaic.
Kapas Island 68 km
A small island off Marang, roughly 1.5 by 2.5 kilometres, with little Gemia Island just to its north. Its name means cotton, after the white beaches, and jungle runs down to coral reefs in clear water.
Kenyir Lake 89 km
A vast man-made lake in Hulu Terengganu, created in 1985 when the Kenyir Dam closed the upper Terengganu River. It is the largest artificial lake in mainland Southeast Asia, and the tops of drowned hills now rise from it as forested islands.
Kampung Laut Mosque 90 km
One of the oldest mosques in Malaysia, a timber building with a tiered roof in the old style of the region. Nobody is sure when it was built: estimates range from the fifteenth century to the eighteenth.
Siti Khadijah Market 94 km
The central market of Kota Bharu, where most of the traders are women and the stalls are piled with produce, spices, fish and Kelantan sweets. The upper floors look down on the colourful ground floor below.
