Chiang Khan
A quiet town on the Mekong in northern Loei, with Laos on the far bank. Its long riverside street of old wooden shophouses fills with walkers in the evening, and at dawn the monks come through on their alms round.

Phu Kradueng
A flat-topped mountain in Loei rising to 1,316 metres, part of the Phetchabun range that divides the North from Isan. The long climb to its plateau is a classic Thai hike, and the top opens out into pine woods, meadows and cliff edges facing the sunrise.

Phu Ruea
A 1,365 metre peak in Loei whose name means boat mountain: from some angles it looks like an upturned hull. It rises in the Phetchabun range north of the highway between Loei town and Phetchabun, and its cool heights draw Thai visitors in the winter months.
