Near One World Trade Center
National September 11 Memorial & Museum 0.2 km
Two square pools sit in the footprints of the original Twin Towers, with water falling into a central void. Around their edges are cut the names of the 2,977 people who died in 2001 and the six who died in 1993, and the museum lies beneath, among the old foundations.
Charging Bull 0.8 km
A bronze bull of 3,200 kilograms with its head lowered, standing on Broadway just north of Bowling Green in the Financial District. It stands for a rising market and for Wall Street itself, and draws thousands of people a day to pose beside it.
Brooklyn Bridge 1.7 km
Opened in 1883 as the first fixed crossing of the East River, linking Manhattan and Brooklyn, and at the time the longest suspension bridge in the world. A raised walkway runs above the traffic between its stone Gothic towers, with the harbour and the Manhattan skyline on either side.
Ellis Island 2.7 km
The small island where about 12 million immigrants were inspected and processed between 1892 and 1954 on their way into the United States. Its great main building is now a national museum of immigration, reached only by ferry, on the same route as the Statue of Liberty.
Liberty State Park 3.5 km
A 490 hectare park on Upper New York Bay in Jersey City, facing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island across the water. It opened in 1976 for the bicentennial, and ferries leave from its old railway terminal for both islands.
Flatiron Building 3.7 km
A 22-storey steel-framed building on a triangular block where Fifth Avenue meets Broadway, designed by Daniel Burnham and opened in 1902. Seen from the north, its narrow prow recalls the old cast-iron clothes iron that gave it its name.
Statue of Liberty 3.7 km
A copper-clad woman holding a torch over New York Harbor, a gift from the people of France dedicated in 1886. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the figure and Gustave Eiffel the iron framework inside it, and the copper has long since weathered to green.
The High Line 4.0 km
A 2.3 kilometre park built on a disused railway spur raised above the streets of Manhattan's West Side. Planting designed by Piet Oudolf grows between the old rails, and the idea came from the Coulée verte, an elevated walk in Paris finished in 1993.
