10 Hidden gems
Hidden gems in Lam Dong (10)
-
Crazy House
A guesthouse designed and built by the architect Dang Viet Nga that looks like a giant tree melting into caves and cobwebs. Its stairways twist across the roofs, and guests sleep in rooms shaped like animals and hollow trunks.
-
Da Lat Plateau
The high plateau of the southern Central Highlands with the city of Da Lat at its heart, cooler than the coast below. Several of its mountains pass 2,000 metres, the highest being Chu Yang Sin at 2,442 metres.
-
Da Lat Railway Station
An Art Deco station designed in 1932 by the French architects Moncet and Reveron, its three steep roofs borrowed from the communal houses of the Central Highlands. The line fell out of use, but a short track to Trai Mat village still runs as a tourist train.
-
Domaine de Marie Church
A pink Catholic convent church on a hill in Da Lat, begun in 1940 in a blend of French and Vietnamese styles. Nuns still live here and run schooling for local children.
-
Elephant Falls
A wide, loud waterfall on the Cam Ly River in the Central Highlands, about 25 kilometres from Da Lat. Rough steps lead down the rocks to the foot of the falls, where the spray is heaviest.
-
Linh Phuoc Pagoda
A pagoda at Trai Mat, 8 kilometres from Da Lat, covered almost entirely in mosaic made from broken pottery and glass. Its 49 metre dragon is made from 12,000 bottles, with a head 7 metres high.
-
Mui Ne
A fishing ward on the coast near Phan Thiet that turned into a resort strip after crowds came to watch the solar eclipse of October 1995. Palm lined beaches run along the sea, with red and white sand dunes rising behind.
-
Ta Cu Mountain
A forested mountain 28 kilometres west of Phan Thiet, climbed by a 2,290 metre path or a 1,600 metre cable car. Near the top lie two pagodas and a reclining Buddha 49 metres long, the largest in Southeast Asia.
-
Truc Lam Monastery
A Zen monastery of the Truc Lam school on a pine covered hill outside Da Lat. Its gardens and halls look down over Tuyen Lam Lake, and a cable car climbs to it from the edge of town.
-
Xuan Huong Lake
A man made lake in the centre of Da Lat, curving through the hill town below its market and pine slopes. A path runs right round its shore, and swan pedal boats drift on the water.
