  • Amalfi Coast

Amalfi · Campania · UNESCO heritage

A stretch of steep coast on the Gulf of Salerno, south of the Sorrento Peninsula, where towns such as Positano, Amalfi and Ravello cling to the cliffs. A narrow road winds above the sea between them, past lemon terraces and small beaches.

  • Herculaneum

Ercolano · Campania · UNESCO heritage

A Roman seaside town in modern Ercolano, buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD under deep volcanic deposits. Because of that, wooden beams, furniture and upper floors survived here that were lost at Pompeii, so the site is smaller but often better preserved.

  • Paestum

Paestum · Campania · UNESCO heritage

A major ancient Greek city on the Tyrrhenian coast, in what was Magna Graecia. Its three Doric temples, built between about 550 and 450 BCE, are among the best preserved anywhere, and the walls, paved roads and a museum of finds survive around them.

  • Pompeii

Pompei · Campania · UNESCO heritage

A Roman city buried under ash and pumice by Vesuvius in 79 AD and slowly uncovered since the 18th century. Its streets, houses, bakeries, baths and painted walls show ordinary Roman life more fully than almost anywhere else.

  • Royal Palace of Caserta

Caserta · Campania · UNESCO heritage

The main residence of the Bourbon kings of Naples, about 35 kilometres north of the city. Designed by Luigi Vanvitelli in the 18th century, it is one of the largest palaces in the world, with a long park of fountains and pools running up to a cascade.

  • Villa of the Mysteries

Pompei · Campania · UNESCO heritage

A Roman villa on the edge of Pompeii, known for the frescoes of one room painted in the 1st century BC. The figures, on a deep red ground, are usually read as a bride's initiation into a mystery cult, and are among the finest Roman paintings to survive.

Famous places to visit in Campania (10)

  • Amalfi Cathedral

Amalfi · Campania · Well known

A medieval cathedral on the Piazza del Duomo, dedicated to the Apostle Andrew, whose relics lie in its crypt. A long flight of steps climbs to its striped, arched front, and the Cloister of Paradise sits beside it.

  • Blue Grotto

Capri · Campania · Well known

A sea cave on the coast of Capri, entered by small rowing boat through a low opening in the cliff. Sunlight passing through an underwater gap below lights the water an electric blue, and the cave runs about 50 metres into the rock.

  • Cappella Sansevero

Naples · Campania · Well known

A family chapel in the historic centre of Naples, properly the Chapel of Santa Maria della Pietà, filled with Rococo art by leading 18th-century artists. At its centre lies Giuseppe Sanmartino's Veiled Christ, a marble figure under a shroud so fine it looks like cloth.

  • Capri

Capri · Campania · Well known

An island off the Sorrento Peninsula on the south side of the Gulf of Naples, a resort since the days of the Roman Republic. Limestone cliffs, the Faraglioni sea stacks and the hilltop town of Anacapri draw visitors by ferry from Naples and Sorrento.

  • Castel dell'Ovo

Naples · Campania · Well known

A seafront castle on the old island of Megaride, now joined to the shore, on the Gulf of Naples. Its name, the Egg Castle, comes from a medieval legend that the poet Virgil set a magic egg in its foundations, and that the city's luck rests on it staying whole.

  • Ischia

Ischia · Campania · Well known

A volcanic island at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, about 30 kilometres from the city, and the largest of the Phlegraean Islands. Greek traders settled here very early, calling it Pithekoussai, and the island is now known for its hot springs and thermal gardens.

  • Mount Vesuvius

Naples · Campania · Well known

A volcano on the Gulf of Naples, about 9 kilometres east of the city, its cone partly ringed by the rim of an older and much higher mountain. A path climbs to the edge of the crater, with the whole bay spread out below.

  • Naples National Archaeological Museum

Naples · Campania · Well known

One of Italy's great archaeological museums, holding Greek, Roman and Renaissance works and above all finds from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. Mosaics, frescoes and statues from the buried towns fill its rooms, among them the Alexander Mosaic from the House of the Faun.

  • Positano

Positano · Campania · Well known

A town on the Amalfi Coast whose houses, painted in pinks and yellows, tumble down a steep hillside to a small beach. Steps and lanes take the place of streets in much of it, and boats leave from the shore for Amalfi and Capri.

  • Procida

Procida · Campania · Well known

A small island between Cape Miseno and Ischia, joined by a bridge to its tiny neighbour Vivara. Its fishing harbour of Marina Corricella is lined with houses in pastel colours, and it was Italian Capital of Culture for 2022.

  • Villa Rufolo

Ravello · Campania · Local gem

A villa in the historic centre of Ravello, laid out in the 13th century and remodelled in the 19th, facing the cathedral square. Its terraced gardens hang high above the Amalfi Coast, and Richard Wagner drew on them for a scene in Parsifal.
