The best known in the United Kingdom
-
Avebury
A Neolithic henge holding three stone circles, the outer one the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. A village grew up inside and around its great bank and ditch, so the stones stand beside lanes, cottages and fields.
-
Blenheim Palace
One of England's largest houses, built between 1705 and 1722 as the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough, and a World Heritage Site since 1987. Winston Churchill was born here, and the Baroque palace looks out over a landscaped park and lake by Capability Brown.
-
Caernarfon Castle
A medieval fortress begun by Edward I in 1283 on the site of an earlier Norman castle, as the centre of his rule in north Wales. Its banded walls and polygonal towers were modelled on the Walls of Constantinople, and the Roman fort of Segontium lies nearby.
-
Canterbury Cathedral
The cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury and mother church of the worldwide Anglican Communion, on a site of Christian worship since 597. For centuries it was the goal of pilgrims, the ones Chaucer wrote of, and it forms part of a World Heritage Site.
-
Conwy Castle
A fortress built by Edward I between 1283 and 1287, together with the walls that still ring the town of Conwy. Its eight great towers stand over the estuary, and it is part of a World Heritage Site with his other castles in Gwynedd.
-
Durham Cathedral
A great Norman cathedral on a loop of the River Wear, the mother church of the diocese of Durham. It holds the shrines of two Anglo-Saxon saints, Cuthbert and Bede, and together with the castle beside it forms a World Heritage Site.
-
Forth Bridge
A red steel cantilever railway bridge across the Firth of Forth, designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker and completed in 1890. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and trains still cross it every day.
-
Fountains Abbey
The ruins of a Cistercian monastery founded in 1132 near Ripon, which grew into one of the wealthiest in England before it was dissolved in 1539. Its roofless church and cloisters now stand within Studley Royal, an 18th-century landscaped garden.
-
Giant's Causeway
About 40,000 interlocking basalt columns on the north Antrim coast, left by an ancient volcanic eruption. Legend says the giant Finn McCool built it as a path to Scotland, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
-
Hadrian's Wall
A Roman frontier begun in AD 122 under the Emperor Hadrian, running from Wallsend on the Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway across the width of the island. Soldiers manned forts, milecastles and turrets along it, and its best preserved stretches still ride the crags of Northumberland.
-
Harlech Castle
A medieval castle built by Edward I between 1282 and 1289 on a rocky knoll above the Irish Sea. Owain Glyndŵr took it in 1404 and made it his residence and headquarters, and the song Men of Harlech is said to recall a later siege.
-
Heart of Neolithic Orkney
A group of Neolithic monuments on the Mainland of Orkney, made a World Heritage Site in 1999. Around the lochs of Stenness and Harray stand the Ring of Brodgar, the Stones of Stenness and the chambered tomb of Maeshowe.
